Johannesburg Theatre Brings Children's Classics to Stage

The Peoples Theatre once again brings the magic of live theatre to Joburg children in its new production Sleeping Beauty and Other Fabulous Tales, this September and October.

From 13 September to 10 October 2010, Jill Girard and Keith Smith will treat audiences to six beloved and familiar tales in an interactive show filled with humour, adventure and great musical numbers.

Adults and children alike will be bowled over by these creatively staged childhood favourites, brought to you by the team behind the sold-out success of The Jungle Book and Cinderella.

Besides Sleeping Beauty, the energetic cast will be bringing to life the stories of The Three Billy Goats Gruff, Little Red Riding Hood, The Brave Little Rooster, Rumplestiltskin, The Emperor’s New Clothes, The Elves and the Shoemaker and The Three Little Pigs.

Girard and Smith say the production aims not only to introduce young audiences to the joys of live theatre, but also to encourage reading – gently reminding children that books fire up the imagination and open up a world of wonder.

A cast of energetic professional actors immerse themselves in the fun and fantasy of true children’s theatre, involving the young audience members in the stories and enhancing the theatre experience for them

The Jungle Book Comes to Canal Walk

These holidays, Canal Walk Shopping Centre is bringing all the fun of Rudyard Kipling‘s renowned ‘Mowgli’ stories to Cape Town’s children. Disney’s Jungle Book Kids is a spectacular new stage musical based on Disney’s animated feature ‘The Jungle Book’, and it promises to thrill, excite and delight.

Join the ‘man-cub’ Mowgli, the evil tiger Shere Khan, Baloo the bear, jazzy King Louie and many more great characters as they embark on an adventure through the lush jungles of India. Let your children explore the true meaning of friendship through this great tale, which has been loved by all for over a century.

The musical will be staged from 10 June to 10 July, with three shows daily (except on Sundays) at 11am, 12:30 and 14:00. Tickets are R50 per person, at Computicket.

Cinderella Brought to Life on Stage

Cinderella is an exciting and comical show that brings to life the classic children’s story about a young girl looking for her prince. This timeless classic is bought to life by the actors of the People’s Theatre, on a magnificient set with great costumes, song and dance, and loads of audience participation.

The production runs from today, the June 1st to August 8th, excluding Sundays.

The People’s Theatre is at Cnr Loveday and Hoofd St in Braamfontein, Johannesburg

Dr Seuss Classics Come to the National Children's Theatre

Dr Seuss’s Cat in the Hat and other famous stories are brought to life in Seussical Jr. now showing at the National Children’s Theatre. After all those years being stuck on a page, did you ever imagine you’d see me on stage?” So says the mischievous Cat in the Hat at the onset of this fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza. The production is intended for children 3 years and up and runs from May 24th to July 17th.

The National Children’s Theatre is 3 Junction Ave, Parktown Johannesburg. The show runs weekdays during public school term at 9.00am and 10.30am; and during school holidays Mon to Sat at 10.30am and 2.30pm.
