Reviews of Two Books that Take Us Back to the Wild
Amazing Animals Super Safari by Tony Mitton and Ant ParkerAmazing Animals Super Safari is a picture book that takes us deep into the African Serengeti. Along the way, children learn all about many of the animals of Africa. With bright illustrations that give each animal a personality of its own and quirky adventurers who steer the journey along, Super Safari is fun but not the most original story-book on the market.
Christian the Hugging Lion by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell Christian the Hugging Lion is the story of a lion cub sold to two young men, Ace and John, at Harrod’s and how the men decided to take Christian the lion back to Africa. This storybook is based on a true story that became a YouTube phenomenon, turned into a best-selling book and got the two men an interview with Oprah long after Christian had returned to his home.
What is truly moving about the story is that when the two men go to visit Christian, years later and against the advice of every animal professional and most of our common sense intuition, the lion remembers them. The embrace that the three share is a beautiful reminder of the enduring nature of true friendship.
