We accept submissions of content for review from publishers, authors, illustrators, selected review sites and publicists of books, e-books, audiobooks and self-published work for children and young adults.
We welcome all reviews – negative or positive – and value critical, honest discussion regarding children and young adult’s literature.
Contents, languages and structure of Puku reviews
Reviews should be 100-450 words in length and may be submitted in any official South African language. In line with the Puku Children’s Literature Foundation’s aims and missions, submissions in indigenous southern African languages are preferred. While our reviews aim to be both honest and fair, all reviews are purely subjective.
We accept children's fiction and non-fiction as well as Young Adult (YA) fiction and non-fiction for review.
We do not accept:
- Unpublished manuscripts
- Fan fiction
- Flash fiction
- Parenting books
Reviews must contain the following information:
- Author and illustrator (if appropriate)
- Publisher and imprint
- Age of intended readers
- 13-digit unique ISBN
- Date of publication
- A short synopsis or description of the work

Puku does not accept any payment for reviews. Any donations made to the Puku Children’s Literature Foundation are not done in exchange or in appreciation of reviews. Money received through the sale of advertising space does not affect or compromise the integrity of the reviews written.
We return work on only request in advance to the Managing Editor. In general, work submitted is not returned. Please send the work to be reviewed with a cover letter of relevant information, including any press releases or supporting materials. Where it is not available online, a .jpg or .gif of the cover art may be requested by the Puku.co.za Managing Editor via email at bontle[at]book[dot]co[dot]za: please do not send any original artwork by post.
