Remembering Green by Lesley BeakeRemembering Green by South African writer Lesley Beake is a futuristic novel set in South Africa in the year 2250. In the future, climate change has gone from being a distance threat to a frightening reality as the world’s ice caps have melted and the sea level has risen. Cape Town has disappeared under the ocean, resulting in Table Mountain now being an island. The Tekkies live on the island, using 23rd century technology to keep their civilization in tact. Now, their resources are running out and they’ll do whatever they have to to hold onto their way of life – including kidnapping the princess of the River People.
This is a beautiful and powerful story, uniquely African as it is universal, and teaching a lesson that we all need to learn before it’s too late.
