Story Time Controls Bad Behaviour

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

boySo yesterday my son was really behaving badly and I had tried everything in the book to calm him down, even the reward system which normally works like a charm wasn’t working, so with all hope lost I raised my voice and said ‘if you continue like this your not going to get your bed time story’ and to my surprise he stopped and begged me to ‘pleeeeeease read him a story’. I was surprised and happy all in one. Who would have thought that taking away story time could lead to good behaviour yet threats to take away some toys just a few moments earlier had done nothing? So I share this story with you today feeling very proud of both myself and my son. It also made me realise that my kids actually enjoy books and stories so it’s not something that they feel forced into but they actually want to do it. So lets keep doing what we can to encourage reading and story time for all the kids on this country and most importantly, lets keep it fun!

New Nigerian Publisher Brings Old Hadley Chase Favourites to Youth

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Goldfish Have No Hiding Place

Like a Hole in the HeadGood Books Africa is a new publishing company, operating nationwide in Nigeria. Gbenro Adegbola, the company’s chairman, believes that the company’s “major aim is to promote and encourage the reading culture among Nigerian youth.” To do this, the company has chosen to use the works of an old Nigerian favourite to get this generation reading. Good Books will re-introduce the works of James Hadley Chase, sometimes considered one of the best British writers in the 1970s; and author of dozens of books that were popular with Nigerian readers in the 1980s. Good Books Africa also plans to promote new and established local writers, alongside international authors.

The launch offered a raffle draw for purchase of the books. Mr. Adegbola explained that the rationale behind this was “to encourage the reading culture among youths in our country, we want to capture (readers) with good and interesting stories, as well as through the introduction of promos and consolidated prizes, when they purchase any novels of James Hadley Chase.” The raffle draw winners will be announced in September, with the star prize winner winning a 2009 Kia Picanto. Consolation prizes include: refrigerators, television sets, laptops, and digital cameras.
